Many of you know I moved from New Jersey to the middle of nowhere, Virginia. As someone that strives to eat healthy as much as possible, one of the things that has been frustrating to me is the lack of organic farms or the availability of quality organic produce where we live. There is some, but I have to drive quite a distance to get it.
My daughter gets Misfits Market deliveries and suggested I sign up using her referral code. So I got a discount on my first order and she got a referral credit. I was generally pleased with my first order, which I just received. Ha. It came from New Jersey.
I didn’t know much about this service and figured there are others that may not be familiar with it either so I wanted to review it for you.
What It Is
Misfits Market seeks to fight the waste of food by providing irregular produce to your door at a discount. They do this by rescuing foods that can’t be sold and are destined to be thrown out because there’s too much, they are too small, too big, weird looking, out of date packaging and/or short dated.
“We have a two-pronged mission here at Misfits Market: to provide affordable access to healthy food and to fight the food waste crisis.“
It’s not just produce. They also have dairy and non-dairy products, snacks, beverages, pantry items, pet items, quality meat and seafood.
How It Works
You sign up for an account, but it’s FREE. You aren’t obligated to purchase every week. Just when you want to. There is a minimum purchase of $30 for an order. If you don’t happen to meet it, they don’t ship that week, like if you are going on vacation or something. There is a flat fee for shipping of $5.50. There is no commitment. You can cancel anytime or pause your account for an extended time off.
You pick the day you want it delivered and they tell you when your order needs to be ready.
It arrives on your selected day by FedEx or other carrier.
My Order
Once I set up my account, ordering was easy. They give you a 3 day ordering window based on the delivery day you pick. I picked Friday, so my window to order was the previous Saturday through Monday.
My order arrived by FedEx on Friday around 10ish. It would have been nice if the delivery guy rang the bell so I knew it was there.

The package arrived in good condition. It was heavy though. I couldn’t pick it up. I had to push it to the kitchen.

It was well packed, cushioned and had ice packs to keep the foods cool. They had only just started to melt. They are biodegradable and the gel can go down the sink (following directions). However, I don’t know how safe it is for septic systems. They are also reusable, so I chose to put them in the freezer. They’ll make good ice packs for boat trips and keeping things cool down on the dock.

It even came with a recipe card. Not for anything I bought. I’ll have to hold on to it for another day.

It all looked pretty good.

The only issue I had was the apples were super tiny, like baby apples. I emailed the company explaining that was not what I was expecting and wouldn’t have purchased them if I had known. They promptly responded and offered to refund my money or give me a credit on my account.

My daughter also had the milk cartons come crushed because of the heavy products on top, but they gave a credit for that.
Overall I was happy with the experience and will keep ordering.
