I had a chance to try Juice Plus+ supplements. I was given samples of the chewables which is like a gummy vitamin.
These supplements are made from fruits and vegetables that are juiced and dried. They come in vegetable and berry blends. Each blend contains 10-11 fruits and/or vegetables. NSF testing ensures that the processing and packaging of the product is free from contaminants.
Varieties of chewables:
- berry blend
- fruit blend
- vegetable blend
Hopefully, we all know the importance of eating many servings of fruits and vegetables each day. These supplements are an effort to aide you in “filling the gap” between what you actually eat and should eat.
Keep in mind that these are NOT vitamins. They do however add vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E to the ingredients. Other than that, we don’t know what it contains. Even when I contacted the company, they were not able/willing to tell me how much of anything was in a serving.
They also contain sugar. Frankly, I don’t want sugar in my supplements.
The first 3 ingredients are tapioca syrup, maltodextrin and evaporated cane juice. I don’t want a supplement where those are the top ingredients.
There are favorable studies that show benefit, but keep in mind they were all done by the Juice Plus company. So there could be some bias in reporting.
So what are the pros and cons of this product?
- a nice variety of fruits and vegetables
- tastes good
- kids would like the taste
- label says it is non-GMO, but there’s no certification
- gluten free
- no artificial colors
- no artificial preservatives
- no hfcs
- made from whole food
- provides extra nutrients
- there’s no way to know how much of any nutrient you are getting
- two of the first 3 ingredients are sugar
- contains 2 grams of sugar for 2 gummies; 4 gummies recommended per day. If you take both fruit and vegetable blends, then double that.
- maltodextrin is the second ingredient
- not organic
- low fiber
Since these are not organic, this is a concern to me since many of these vegetables and fruits are on the dirty dozen list. This might not be a concern to you though.
This is NOT a substitute for eating fruits and vegetables by any means. If you are eating a variety of fruits and vegetables already, it is unnecessary. However, if you are someone who won’t touch a fruit or vegetable, it might be a good idea to get some of those missing nutrients.
When I contacted the company for the results of their product testing, they refused to release it saying, that I wouldn’t have enough knowledge to understand it. Also their response was conflicting with the response I received from the testing company.
I think there are better, cheaper options. However, you need to research and make your own decision. Decide what is important to you.
